comment: I read the "history" of piano, and I was truly disappointed that there was no mention of the Franklin Piano Co.

I have attempted numerous methods of searching the web for Franklin Piano Co., and I have been unsuccessful.

I have an upwright piano made by Franklin Piano Co. There are two numbers on it: one is imprinted in metal: 205 which is located on the left side, the other number is in black ink lettering located in the center: 9258. Ben Franklin's picture is printed inside the piano, and at the very top of the inside of the piano imprinted in metal it says: Adjusted Scale Franklin Piano Co New York Patent Action Frame. What year was this piano built? Where do you suggest I go on the web to find out more info. about this company to determine if it was bought out or it went bankrupt?

On the survey I picked "someone who likes to fill out questionnaires" because I was a student - but no longer a student - there was no option for that! Otherwise, this site is pretty interesting - thanks for keeping it going!!
=======================================================

The reason we don't have much on American pianos is we have not even finished with the UK ones we reckon 20 years more However.....

Your piano was one of the first they made the company was est in 1900 serial number for 1900 is 10000 and 1901 is 15000 last know address is 415 W 28 Street New York Stopped making pianos c1933 Aeolian used the name after that. Ron Berry may help @ www.ptg.org Regards Barrie,

I also have a baby grand that I play. I was wondering where I could find out about this piano, how much it was worth etc.

comment: hello. I aquired a beautiful upright piano from a lady who had redecorated her house and didn't want to scratch the walls by bringing it back in the house. so she advertised it in loot for free to anyone who could get it picked up. shockingly it was just dumped in her back garden in dulwich with a sheet on top of it getting very wet. it took five men and an iceland box mover but we did it (an iron frame I am assuming?). it now sits very proudly in my living room but cannot be played. many of the keys have become loose but not one of them is broken. there are beautiful flowers inlayed in a yellow couloured wood into what I can only assume is mahoganny. it needs a lot of work but is truly breathtaking to look at. there is a stamp on it saying it was awarded the victorian gold medal in 1899 but I don't know if this was the design itself or the company. I can't seem to find out much in the way of history about Henry Hicks other than he left Cramer to set up on his own in the late 1800s. I can't bear not knowing where it originally came from and am hoping you can help. I will have it properly restored when I have the money but for now am simply happy to look at it, polish it, and have my 3 year old son run his fingers across the keys. I was much the same when I got my 1920s art deco engagement ring and still can't sleep for not knowing its history!! thanking you in advance for any help you may profer and a very happy christmas ruth bradley and her Hicks

The name Henry Riley is enbossed on the piano as well. I think that the piano is in a reasonable condition, very beautiful, although two hammers are destroyed. What do you think? Would it be worth restoring it properly? Many thanks for your time

Many thanks.

ps I could not find an e-mail address to send the above alterations to; that is why I am sending them from this page.

========================================================

When you filled in the form you were informed twice how to update - go to the teachers page and refill in the form and put the words update in the 2nd comment section BTW Wigan postal address is Gt Manchester.

If you search the site on your name you will find your old listing also if you search on "Changing Information" that would have told you how as well.

comment: Your site is most interesting. I wish it had been available when my father was still alive, he would have been SO interested too. My grandfather was a blind tuner, as was an uncle, and my father was a sighted tuner - a real family thing! I have two questions - is there a history or records kept of piano tuners and blind tuners? My grandfather worked for Lyon and Hall in Brighton, and kept tuning for his whole life, tuning for some famous piano players until he was in his 90s. I would be most interested to add some more details to our family tree history. Secondly, I have a 'Universal Dust Bellows' made by August Kraushaar in Germany, trade mark no:270725, also with a Royal Coat of Arms on it. My father used it for all his life of tuning and repairing pianos. I would like to find out the age of it, where made in Germany, and potential value for insurance purposes if need be. Do you know where I might find any information on these questions? Thank you very much for any help you may be able to share with me. Janet Bryon

I cannot find any information on the maker. There is a name and date of a previous owner who purchased the piano in 1934. The piano says - Benedict of London. - Manufactured expressly for Methven Simpson Ltd. (Dundee, St. Andrews, Falkirk, Perth and Edinburgh. I would be interested in any information about the makers or misc. info. about this piano. I am curious about the date it might have been built. Thankyou. Michelle Bailey

=============================================

Sorry no I have not come across that make before, the price of a piano all depends on Age, Condition and local market forces, your local piano tuner is the best person to ask. As to selling there are some good sites in the US for selling pianos I think we are the only one that allows free ads However, we only allow UK Ads

If you look at this page there is a list of sites that will advertise your piano for you

This piano is from England from an estate that touts that it survived the blitz. It is an upright and appears to have ivory keys. The veneer is in good condition, needing only minor repairs. The cords appear to all be present and there is one hammer missing. Where can we find historical information as well as someone who can help us restore this ornate piano?

Considering that she is registered blind with macular degeneration she is getting on very well. We have rigged up a device which holds the music immediately in front of her eyes. This has the disadvantage that she cannot see the keyboard and having to read the music when it is about 1-2 inches in front of your eyes obviously slows progress. I wonder whether you know of anyone else in her position who has attempted to learn the instrument? If so are there any tips they might be able to pass on? Do you know of any useful sites for her? Do you have any advice for her? Are there any teachers who would be able to give the special kind of tuition she would need? If you could answer even one of these queries I would be most grateful.

comment: Could you give me any info on these piano's. Are they rare? Were they well made? Are they as good to play, sound etc,as a modern piano,my piano has just been overhauled but I am wondering if it compares. Do these "upright grands" normally sound as good as a baby grand? The seriel # is 30323. Lastly, how do you rate Collard and Collard grand piano's, circa 1910-40. Thanks very much.

I have been tuning and servicing the Kemble studio pianos here in the Minneapolis area (Mr. Jim Laabs, our Kemble Dealer) over the past couple of years and have been pleasantly surprised by their quality and performance. I'm currently collecting a wide variety of DVD/VHS videos of Piano Manufacturing plant operations. I currently have secured from Schimmel piano; Mason and Hamlin; if any one there in the UK can help me secure one from the Kemble operations, I would be grateful..Many thanks and keep up the great work!

You could ask Kembles they did ask when we were likely to put streaming video on the site but I think that was for a sales promo try asking Peter Corney kemble@uk-piano.org. Barrie,

I know you can't possibly (or maybe you can) tell me every single brand of pianos made...but, I can NOT find anything on Kingsbury pianos manufactured in Chicago USA. I acquired this piano and it is in need of repair, but, I would like some history on it. There has to be some information someplace. Any help would be GREATLY APPRECIATED! It is black in color, upright victorian style with carvings. It has wooden hammers and some (flat head) screws in places. Inside it says "CHICAGO" printed in ink on a metal (goldish in color) background. That is all. I assume the serial number is the wooden numbers hammered into the wood on the inside back panel. It is a beautiful piano and I would just like to find some history on it. Then it will be sent to be repaired/overhauled. I am keeping it...it sounds beautiful even though mice have knawed some of the hammers off and it is out of tune. Thanks! Sincerely! Calisa Oklahoma/USA

It's an iron frame overstrung upright grand by L Neufeld, Berlin, serial number 8271, complete with candle holders etc. It has to have been made post 1880, as the stamp from winning a prize in Paris is on the inside ! (along with several others from other exhibitions.) I reckon it's about 1900, but he'd love to know more about its history.

comment: Having spent six months looking for a second-hand piano for my daughter to learn on, I can see what made the Eavestaff a popular choice. Its tiny; it fits into small rooms; the case (wooden veneer- not the art deco) looks great. The Heath Robinson action is intriguing. In fact, having bought it, I've just had to learn to play the thing myself. I'm hoping that I won't be dissatisfied with the sound it makes for many years. One piano is enough between two.

It was then handed on to my grandfather JM Mckillop who died in the 1930's.Unfortunatly my granmother sold the firm as my father & his brothers were away at war.The shop was located at 202 Sauchiehall Sreet, Glasgow. Details of the shops opening can be found in the Piano & Organ Journal Sept 1903.We also had cousins in the same trade, who were located in Oxford Street, London.My grandfather visited New York in the 1920's to gain new ideas from the Americans - he met Thomas Edison on this visit. Hope this information is of interest.

The F.A.Q. page is a bit hard to negotiate, unless my browser isn't designed to handle a European site (?). It's too big, with large expanses and sentences that stretch beyond the screen. Here's another one: the sentence below this box: "The flowing [sic] information", instead of "the following information".

comment: This piano was brought to Canada in 1910 by my Dad's family, it has been in the family ever since. It is in sad shape, apparently English pianos don't do very well when subjected to the Canadian Prairies (and who can blame them!). I don't know when the last time was it would have been tuned, it's certainly suffering. I am looking for info about the builder, and anything else I can find. The piano itself has two brass candle holders on either side of the harp. The harp can be stored in the upper part of the piano. The body of the piano is some kind of burled wood, and has a carving with flowers and leaves between the candle holders. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks, Sheila (I also have a 20 yr old Kawai, works fine!)

comment:

Dear piano-friends, as I cannot find an e-mail adress to contact you, I have to do it here.

Tracing back the history of early instruments is not easy. Each instrument leaves its own trail and that trail sometimes takes us into the shadowy abyss of the past. We have, however, been able to discover a few main traits, tendencies and interesting elements.

Our intention in putting together our catalogue is not only to show the historical side of the piano, but also its technical side. In other words, we have tried to pass on both historical and technical information. The sources of these ideas are in literature, in tradition and in the historical examples, the pianos themselves. The short texts accompanying the photos primarily explain the history of the instrument pictured. Sometimes there are also technical elements, relevant for those familiar with the historic piano. The accompanying texts can be considered as providing particular details not in the main text. The main text is meant primarily for those unfamiliar with historic instruments. There is much background information which can be useful for getting an idea of piano history and technology. The main text contains sociological, historical, reflective and technical perspectives. These elements should create a general framework within which the specific importance of the historic instruments can be understood. A conscious choice was made not to show the pianos history in a classic fashion. Thus, rather than providing a general outline of the whole history, we have illustrated seven different facets of its development. We chose this procedure firstly because it better suits the instruments shown, and secondly because it has the advantage that we can present specific information which is interesting for lay people and experts alike.

Having told you about the contents of the catalogue, we need to acknowledge why and by whom it was put together. This catalogue is just one part of a much larger piano event. It is intended as a guide to the visitor to a piano exhibition held from 19 April 2002 until 8 June 2002 in Ghents municipal concert hall De Bijloke. The instruments in the catalogue are on exhibit, and there are also various piano concerts, workshops, childrens activities and lectures.

You can order this book with an e-mail to piano@leanthe.com. The price is 25 Euro for the book, the sending is 2 Euro. Or you can come to Belgium and visit our exhibition and buy the book there. We offer a free citytrip in Ghent for journalists who can write about this book and/or exhibition in their media! Just send us a mail!
Kind regards

comment: It's my Mom's piano and she's trying to get feedback on it. It came from overseas when my Great Grandparents came over.The piano has on the front "Alfred Hoflieferant" and "Merhaut Leipzig" between the names is a horse. The year on it is 1868. On the inside is the word Fegrundel. Any information that I could get on this piano would be helpful. It's unable to be tuned properly because of saltwater damage from when it came to the USA.Thank you for any information you are able to give. Sincerely, Sheila

comment: I have always wanted to learn to play the piano. I bought this piano at a sale, when my son was a teen ager. I got checking the dates. I believe it is over 100 years old. The piano was made special order for Mrs. Bette Westbrook. It has 4 patented dates with the last one being March 5, 1895. The piano has a beautiful Gold Emblem with George P. Bent's signature. I will check the history of the piano. If you have any particular comments, I put in an email address. Sincerely Kelva Harvey

comment: I am looking for information regarding the manufacturer of this piano. S/N is 1975 as best I can gather at this time. It is being given to me by an aunt and I haven't gotten all the info on the s/n myself. Can you give me any info on this? Is it worth spending money on to get refurbished/tuned? I can't find much information at all on Web regarding this.

Thank you for your help.

Glenn Andrews

My reply

Strich & Zeilder last know address 740 East 136st New York Est 1889 Stopped production c1925 The S/ number you have given would date it c1902 you have a digit missing as all their numbers were 5 digits, if it is off the end no problem, but if it from the start this will make a big difference to the date I have give you.

As to restoring/tuning the piano this all depend on it's condition, I would get it tuned, by a tuner that restores as well, he/she will tell you if the piano is worth the cost. In the US uprights are not restored as much as in the UK see http://www.masterpianotechnicians.org/ or www.ptg.org for a local tuner.

Barrie,

comment: I am trying to find out information about this piano. I have owned it for about 5 years and know nothing about it. It has a hidden music holder that when not in use is inside the upright section of the piano and is hinged and comes out. In the center of the upright section is an inlaid mother of pearl design and on either side is a single brass candle holder. The foot pedals are what appears to be brass surrounded by a "kick" plate also of brass. The keys appear to be ivory. I belive this piano is quite old. Any information would be greatfully appreciated. In advance, thanks you for any information.
